Yarra City Council is collaborating with the Vietnamese community to create an enduring commemorative marker to recognise the 50-year anniversary of the arrival of Vietnamese refugees in Australia. The Commemorative Marker will be a tribute to those who undertook the journey to start a new life in Victoria, and a celebration of their remarkable contribution to Victoria Street and the suburbs of Richmond and Abbotsford.
The Commemorative Marker will be completed in 2026 and the budget is $350,000 which will cover all aspects of the project.
We are now accepting EOI’s from artists.
Eligibility
Victorian artists who identify as part of the Vietnamese community and/or have lived experience of migration are encouraged to apply. Eligible artists can be in all stages of their career, and work in all media. A strong history of producing works for the public realm is desirable.

The Commemorative Marker will be commissioned through a two-step process.
STEP ONE: Expression of Interest (EOI)
Applicants are asked to respond to three questions about their working methodology and provide an artist bio, CV and images of previous works (up to six images).
Please note: No artwork concept design is required at this stage.
STEP ONE DEADLINE
EOIs close 11:59pm on Friday 4 July 2025
STEP TWO: Concept Design Stage
Monday 28 July – Monday 25 August
Shortlisted artists will develop their final concept proposals and present to the Community Project Consultative Group for selection and recommendation.
Shortlisted artists must be available to present their proposal on Friday 12 September 2025
